As you may already know, Emily and I truly loved our stay in Boquete, Panama. It was easily the highlight of our trip to Central America. Nestled in Panama’s Chiriquí Highlands, Boquete is the perfect destination for hikers, nature lovers, and coffee enthusiasts. With its cool mountain climate, lush cloud forests, and the towering presence of Volcán Barú nearby, the Chiriquí region has loads to offer. This small town offers some of the best hiking trails in Boquete, making it a top spot for outdoor lovers in Central America.
Whether you want to summit Panama’s highest peak or wander through dense jungle or the lost waterfalls, Boquete has a trail for you. In this article, we’re breaking down our top 5 hiking trails in Boquete, each one offering its own unique adventure.
1. Volcán Barú – Solcán Barú – One Of The Toughest Hiking Trails in Panama
Where better to start our list of top 5 hiking trails in Boquete than with Panama’s tallest mountain? Volcán Barú is one of the most iconic hikes in Boquete and is considered one of the best hikes in all of Central America. This massive stratovolcano towers at 3,475 metres and can be seen from nearly every corner of Boquete!
Unfortunately, we didn’t get to hike it ourselves, something we both genuinely regret! The views from above are meant to be stunning. The idea of seeing both the Pacific and Caribbean from the summit at sunrise sounds amazing to me!

Tip 1: Most hikers begin the Volcán Barú hike at midnight to catch the sunrise, so bring a headlamp, wear layers, and be prepared for cold temperatures. Conditions at the summit can drop below freezing!
Tip 2: There are no bus routes to the trailhead, so it’s best to organise a taxi in advance through your hotel or hostel. Bring plenty of snacks and water for the long trek.
2. El Pianista Hiking Trail – The Dense Cloud Forest Awaits!
Second on our list and my personal favourite hiking trail is the El Pianista Trail. This one stands out for its dramatic shift in scenery. It starts off with scenic farmland and rolling hills, and streams, eventually transitioning into dense cloud forest.
We were genuinely blown away by this hike. Just look at the photos, we couldn’t believe how thick the vegetation was. It’s easily one of the most memorable hikes I’ve done, not just in Panama, but anywhere.

Best of all, it’s also an easy one to reach: minibuses from town will take you close to the trailhead for about $1, or you can grab a taxi for around $4. It’s perfect if you’re looking for an adventure that doesn’t require a full-day commitment or a huge budget!
Tip: Bring enough water, some snacks, and proper hiking shoes. The trail gets muddy, and you’ll likely be out for 4–6 hours. For us, this was the perfect mix of beauty, challenge, and mystery.
IMPORTANT: Stay on the trail! Unfortunately, there have been travellers who’ve gone missing when starting from this trail. The cloud forest is very dense and disorientating! We’d definitely recommend downloading all trails before heading off!
3. The Lost Waterfalls Hiking Trail – Lush Jungle & Cascading Falls
Although we didn’t get the chance to hike the Lost Waterfalls Trail ourselves, it’s one of the most talked-about trails in Boquete, and for good reason. This well-loved route takes you through dense cloud forest to three stunning waterfalls, each one more dramatic than the last.
It’s known for being both accessible and rewarding, with plenty of scenic viewpoints and photo opportunities along the way. Many hikers even cool off with a quick dip beneath one of the falls!
If you’re after a classic Boquete hiking experience that offers a great balance between effort and reward, this is definitely one to consider.

Tip: There’s a small entrance fee (cash only), and the trail is popular. Arrive early to enjoy the waterfalls without the crowds!
4. Pipeline Hiking Trail – Simple And Stunning
This is one of, if not the easiest, trails in Boquete and a great place to start your hiking adventure, especially if you’re arriving tired from travelling the day before. The Pipeline Trail follows an old water pipe through cloud forest along the Quebrada La Mina stream and is ideal for a relaxed morning or afternoon walk.
We did this trail on our first full day in Boquete, and it was the perfect low-key outing while we were still recovering from travel. The entrance fee is just $3 per person, and you can easily reach the trailhead by minibus or taxi from town for a couple of dollars.

5. Tree Trek Hanging Bridges Trail – Something Completely Different
Located within the Boquete Tree Trek Mountain Resort, this is the only hike on our list that must be done with a guide. It offers something completely different from the other trails, a walk above the forest canopy via six suspension bridges. The guided tour focuses on local flora, fauna, and the importance of the surrounding ecosystem, making it both a scenic and educational experience.
Although we didn’t do this one ourselves, we heard great things from other travellers who appreciated the chance to experience the forest from a different angle. It’s especially good for families, those short on time, or anyone looking for a gentler, more structured adventure!

Tip: This is one of the most popular Boquete Panama tours, so book ahead if you’re planning to head there in the high season!
